Shapiro heads to Canada
Gov. Shapiro headed northward this week to participate in the Eurasia Group U.S.-Canada summit in Toronto. City & State PA reports, “On Wednesday, Shapiro met with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, leader of Canada’s most populous province, before the two signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen economic relations.” Naturally, Shapiro also used the opportunity on an international stage to blast President Trump, because that’s what Shapiro does.
Marijuana bill fails in odd vote
Fox43 reports, “A bipartisan effort to create a cannabis control board in Pennsylvania has suffered a major setback” after the state Senate voted 23-27 yesterday against the measure. The bill, which itself would not have immediately legalized marijuana but would have moved Pennsylvania closer, “would have established safety standards for marijuana products and created a dedicated board to oversee the medical cannabis industry.” Here’s the oddity: Several of the bill’s Democrat co-sponsors voted against it.
Williams: Do right by Pa. kids
Democrat state Sen. Anthony Williams (Philadelphia & Delaware counties) writes in Broad + Liberty that joining the new federal tax credit scholarship program “should not be a Republican vs. Democrat conversation. Every lawmaker and state leader should be able to unify behind the goal of supporting the children of this state.” Thus far, Gov. Shapiro has refused to commit to joining the program, which would allow Pennsylvania’s students to benefit from increased educational opportunity. Williams notes, “Pennsylvania has an opportunity to lead by embracing a practical, fiscally responsible solution that empowers families, strengthens educational support systems and keeps private charitable dollars invested in our communities. We should do right by Pennsylvania children and opt into the federal tax credit scholarship program.”
‘20 House Republicans work for union bosses’
Our friends at The Committee to Unleash Prosperity didn’t mince words in describing “the shameful list of the 20 House Republicans who joined every Democrat to pass the Faster Labor Contracts Act, which would empower federal bureaucrats to impose union contracts.” On the list are two Pennsylvanians: U.S. Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick and Rob Bresnahan, both of whom are prime electoral targets of the Left this November.
Dem super PAC targets NEPA congressional race
And speaking of the Left’s electoral targets (see previous item), the Democrat super PAC American Bridge—which gets millions from the AB Foundation, a so-called ‘dark money’ group—is targeting the 8th congressional district in Northeast Pa., currently represented by Rep. Rob Bresnahan. The seat is one of 14 U.S. House races on which the PAC plans to spend a combined approximately $50 million this year.
